An unusual feature of the town is that many of the buildings in Fore Street have slate hung walls. This is both protective and decorative. Slate hung buildings can also be found in Totnes.

Although the names over the shop fronts change, the tradition of small shops serving the town and its surrounding communities continues.

Narrow lanes, with walls built from the local slates and shales radiate off Fore Street. These are features of the original town settlement, following the burgage plots. During the nineteenth century the town was infilled with densely packed cottages.
