| | | | | | | The South Hams Countryside Kingsbridge
lies in in the Southernmost part of Devon. Steep soft hills and deep
valleys are a major feature of our landscape. The area around Kingsbridge
is also kown asth South Hams, an old English word, hamme, meaning
an enclosed or sheltered place. Much of the country around Kingsbridge
is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This special status not only establishes the importance of the area
to our national heritage, it also confirms that it is a truly beautiful
place. Here agruculture continues to be a part of the local economy.
Above all, agriculture has fashioned our countryside into a rolling
landscape of patchwork fields that cannot fail to charm all who live
or visit here.
From local government to a wide range of community interest groups,
conservation is of foremost importance to all who live here. There
are many Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and nature reserves. Kingsbridge
Estuary is at the centre of the landscape in the South Hams. Winding
creeks and rolling patterned hills are a feature of the area around
Kingsbridge but just twenty miles to the north is the very different
landscape of Dartmoor. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
