| | | Looking
east from Gara Rock to Gammon Head with Prawle Point beyond. The prehistoric
fields on Deckler's Cliff can be seen in the foreground. This beautiful
stretch of coastline faces south and has a milder climate. For thousands
of years vessels have been wrecked along this stretch of coastline.

| | | The
hotel at Gara was originally a Coastguard Station and Lookout, built principally
to stop illegal smuggling along the isolated coastline. Its secondary function
was to watch for vessels in difficulty. During its short life as a Lookout
Station the staff saved many lives from stricken ships.

| This
section of coastline is the most spectacularly beautiful of the South West
Coastpath. Walkers take the foot ferry at Salcombe to cross the estuary. The
footpath continues eastwards to Start Point and then north along Start Bay
towards Dartmouth. | | |
