| | Looking
north from Start Point, at the southernmost tip of Start Bay. There is only
a shingle ridge protecting the fishing villages of Start Bay from the sea.
Dredging at the turn of the century within the bay removed too much shingle
and during the subsequent years the old village of Hallsands was lost to
the sea. | | | |

| The
remains of the old village of Hallsands at the foot of the cliff. The original
settlements were inland, away from the coast which was vulnerable to raiders
and warfare. The villages close to the shore were established from the C16th
onwards. | |
