South Pool, at the head of one of the many creeks in the Kingsbridge Estuary is navigatable on the highest tides. The village is one of the most charming in the area. It has a beautiful church and its pub, although small is one of the most popular in the area. Inland from South Pool are the small settlements of Ford and Kernborough and Chivelstone.

Traditional cottages, mostly thatched, form the main street in the village. The church is above the village, probably the original centre of the settlement. There are many ancient and domesday settlements in these sheltered valleys, indicating a long and settled history.
